Philosopher G.W.F. Hegel connects gender and food in his 1820 book ‘Elements of the Philosophy of Right’, and even within this day and age, his findings are still very much accurate. The correlation of lexis used for ‘plant’ foods and femininity exists, effeminate or queer men are labelled ‘fruity’ or ‘fruitcake’ to indicate their passive, ‘manly’ nature. More masculine women are often labelled ‘butch’

evoking images of butchery and the slaughtering of animals, portraying more aggressive and manly attributes. This connection between identity and language inspired my creation of 'Glammed, Grilled Girls' displayed as you would find them within a supermarket, wrapped suffocatingly tightly within

cellophane/clingfilm, the meat exhibited as the enticing factor of the product. As a vegetarian and queer woman myself, this has made me reflect on my own consumerism and the idea that I have

subconsciously purchased products to deter or encourage these connections with my identity.
